Is online gambling legal in Portugal?

It is. Online gambling has been regulated in Portugal since 2015 under the Legal Regime for Online Games and Betting (RJO), approved by Decree-Law no. 66/2015. Only operators that have obtained a licence from the Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ) may offer gambling to residents of Portugal.

What exactly is the SRIJ?

The Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service is the body that regulates online gambling in Portugal. It sits within Turismo de Portugal, I.P. It issues licences, supervises operators, runs the central self-exclusion register, and publishes the list of licensed entities together with each licence document as a PDF.

Which licences do 888 and LeBull hold?

888 Casino is operated by 888 PORTUGAL LIMITED under licence no. 016 for online games of chance. The authorised game types are slot machines, tournament poker, Hold’em and Omaha poker (including under shared liquidity), draw-less poker and French roulette. LeBull is operated by SOUTHERN STINGRAY, S.A., which holds two licences: no. 027 for fixed-odds sports betting and no. 028 for games of chance, in this case slot machines. How do I confirm a licence is valid myself?

Open the register of licensed entities on the SRIJ site and look for the licence holder — not the commercial brand. Then open the licence PDF: it contains the number, the date and the list of authorised game types. Every review on this site links straight to those documents, including the amendments that modify them.

How does self-exclusion work in Portugal?

The SRIJ maintains a central self-exclusion register. Once you sign up, you are blocked from every operator licensed in Portugal simultaneously, for the period you choose. You do not have to repeat the request operator by operator. You can submit it online on the SRIJ site or with any licensed operator.

What limits can I set on my account?

Licensed operators are required to offer daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits and to show session time information. Most also offer loss limits, wager limits, cooling-off periods and self-assessment tests. Limit reductions take effect immediately; increases are subject to a reflection period imposed by regulation.
